Ministry of Lector

Mission Statement

"A scripture is inspired of God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction and for training in righteousness so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Job Description

A lector is one whose service is to proclaim God's word in a way that the congregation can hear the Word, be challenged by the Word and live the Word.

God speaks through the Scriptures, but His Word is only effective if the Lector proclaims the Word well. The Lector has the responsibility to be prepared and familiar with the readings before the Mass. The Lector should strive to understand the readings so that he or she can project that understanding to the congregation. To help facilitiate this understanding, Lectors will be supplied with workbooks that give some background to the Sunday Scripture. In addition, guides are available that will help with pronunciation of especially difficult, archaic and/or seldom used words.
